DAYTON, Ohio - Dayton rushed out to a 21-point halftime lead behind sharp long distance shooting and breezed to a 74-49 non-conference victory over UNCW in a non-conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at UD Arena.

The Flyers improved to 2-1 on the young season and 2-0 at UD Arena, where they have amassed a 78-10 record on Tom Blackburn Court over the last six seasons. The Seahawks now stand 0-2 following season-opening road losses at Maryland and Dayton.

Playing in one of college basketball's historic arenas, the Seahawks trailed, 39-18, at the break as Dayton dialed long distance to outscore the visitors, 18-0, behind the arc. The Flyers extended the margin to as many as 29 points on three occasions in the second half before notching their second win in three tries.

"I saw a team that was hungry and just kind of smashed us right in the mouth," said Buzz Peterson, UNCW's second year coach. "They just lost at Miami, Ohio, and they were ready to put an end to it. It was the first taste of a real college atmosphere for some of our freshmen  and I told our guys there's a lesson to be learned here."

Senior forward Chris Johnson led all scorers with 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting and added seven rebounds for UD, which owned a 44-38 edge on the glass. Junior guard Kevin Dillard added 18 points on a variety of shots and was the maestro of UD's efficient offensive attack.

Junior forward Keith Rendleman scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for his seventh career double double  with the Seahawks. Freshman guard Adam Smith chipped in 10 points for UNCW, which struggled offensively from the floor, shooting just 34.5 percent.

The Flyers , who returned three starters from last year's 22-14 team that reached A-10 championship game, wound up shooting 40.9 percent overall on 27-of-66, but hit 10-of-26 behind the arc, including 6-of-15 in the opening period.

Senior guard Paul Williams got things going with a three-ball from the right wing and a tip-in by Josh Benson gave UD a quick 5-0 lead with 18:26 left before Rendleman's layup put the Seahawks on the board.

The Flyers continued their assault on UNCW's zone defense, however, and used a 13-2 run over the six minutes to build a working margin. Johnson scored six points in the spurt and a free throw by Benson with 12:43 left in the opening period increased the lead to 18-4.

Still trailing, 24-8, UNCW strung together five points to slice the deficit to 24-13. Smith converted a layup, Nate Anderson scored on a putback and Craig Ponder connected on a free throw with 6:15 on the clock to chip the lead to 24-13.

But UD scored 15 of the next 20 points to close out the half in strong fashion and carry a 39-18 cushion into the break.

UD led by as many as 29 points after intermission. The last time came with 4:20 remaining when reserve Ralph Hill sank a long triple from the left wing for a 67-38 bulge.

The Seahawks return to Wilmington for their first two home games of the new season, starting with a 7 p.m. tip-off Tuesday against Conference USA opponent Marshall. UNCW then wraps up a mini-homestand on Saturday when Davidson comes calling for a 2 p.m. clash.

Dayton travels to Orlando, Fla., to battle Wake Forest on Thursday in a first-round pairing of the Old Spice Classic.
