WILMINGTON, North Carolina - UNCW head baseball coach Mark Scalf has announced the signings of 11 players to letter of intent to play for the Seahawks in 2012-13. Included in that group are Andy Austin, Joe Bertone, Austin Brower, Terence Connelly, Ryan Foster, Jared Gesell, Steven Linkous, Nick Monroe, Evan Phillips, Gavin Stupienski and Christian Wolfe.

"Randy Hood and Jason Howell have done another outstanding job finding players who fit the Seahawk mold," said Scalf, who enters his 21st season as head coach. "Each one of these players has an opportunity to contribute to the success of the program when they set foot on campus. This is a deep and talented class."

The 11-player class includes nine in-state products and a pair of players hailing from New York and New Jersey. Among those instate products, ImpactBaseball.com ranks Phillips (31), Foster (34), Monroe (38) and Gesell (41) in its top-50 rankings in the state. PerfectGame.org ranks Phillips and Monroe among its top 500 players nationally.

Andy Austin (INF, Salisbury, N.C./East Rowan) helped the East Rowan Mustangs to a 3A State title in 2010 after hitting .352 with 34 runs batted in and 11 stolen bases.

Joe Bertone (OF, Huntersville, N.C./Hopewell) has been a two-year starter for the Titans and guided the team to I-Meck Conference titles in 2009 and 2010. Bertone hit seven home runs as a junior in 2011.

Austin Brower (OF, Rockingham, N.C./Richmond Senior) started for the Raiders and coach Ricky Young as a junior ... Hit .311 with two homers and 20 runs batted in ... Also saw time on the mound, finishing with a 2-1 mark and a 2.63 ERA ... In two seasons of varsity baseball, Brower hit .336 with 16 extra base hits and he stole 14 bases.

Terence Connelly (INF, Garden City, N.Y./Chaminade) has been a two-year starter for the Flyers, the top-ranked team on Long Island and plays in the wood bat Nassau Suffolk Catholic High School Athletic Association. Connelly hit .437 with 21 runs scored and stole 12 bases.

Ryan Foster (RHP, Advance, N.C./Davie County) was the Central Piedmont Conference Pitcher-of-the-Year after posting a 9-2 mark and an impressive 1.61 earned run average. Foster fanned 66 in 65.2 innings.

Jared Gesell (INF/RHP, High Point, N.C./High Point) has been a three-year starter for High Point Christian and helped the Cougars to a 2A State title in 2009 and runner-up finishes in 2010 and 2011. Gesell is a two-way talent, hitting .317 with 30 RBI and striking out 27 batters in 24 innings in 2011.

Steven Linkous (INF, Leland, N.C./North Brunswick) is a local product who has been a two-year starter for the Scorpions. He was a 2A All-State selection in both 2010 and 2011. He hit .430 in 2011 with 23 runs scored and 15 stolen bases. He was a Wilmington StarNews All-Area selection in 2011.

Nick Monroe (RHP, Mebane, N.C./Eastern Alamance) helped the Eagles to a Mid-State Conference title in 2011 as a two-way player for coach Randy Ballard. At the plate, Monroe hit .546 and hit 10 home runs and on the mound he went 7-1 with a 2.38 ERA.

Evan Phillips (RHP, Clayton, N.C./Clayton) pitched at the prestigious East Coast Professional Showcase last summer after helping the Comets to the Greater Neuse River Conference title. Phillips posted a 7-3 record and a 1.43 ERA as a junior with 55 strikeouts. He earned All-GNRC honors for his efforts.

Gavin Stupienski (C, Columbus, N.J./Hun School) was a Star Ledger Second-Team All-State selection in 2011 and followed that by hitting .370 with 25 runs scored in 2011.

Christian Wolfe (OF, Wilmington, N.C./Ashley) is another local product for the Seahawks, joining Linkous. Wolfe helped the Screaming Eagles to the 4A Eastern State championship game scoring 32 runs and stealing 12 bases. He was a Wilmington StarNews All-Area selection in 2011.
