Junior Jessica Freeman plays defense against NC State's Krystal Barrett during Wednesday's contest at Reynolds Coliseum

RALEIGH, North Carolina - Freshman Krystal Barrett scored 16 points to lead five NC State players in double figures as the Wolfpack posted an 83-64 victory over UNCW in collegiate women's basketball action Wednesday at Reynolds Coliseum.

NC State improved to 2-0 on the young season as it picked up its fourth straight victory against the Seahawks to remain undefeated in the all-time series between the two in-state rivals. UNCW, meanwhile, dropped to 0-3.

Barrett was 4-for-6 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line to guide a Wolfpack attack that shot 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the field for the contest and converted 22-of-30 (.733) attempts from the charity stripe.

Junior Marissa Kastanek added 14 points while sophomore Kody Burke chipped in 13. Sophomore Myisha Goodwin-Coleman added 11 points and dished out a game-high eight assists. Senior Bonae Holston finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds to record a double-double as the Wolfpack enjoyed a 51-33 advantage on the glass.

Sophomore Alisha Andrews established a new career-high with 23 points, 14 of which came in the first half, to lead UNCW. Andrews was 4-of-6 from three-point range to power a Seahawks three-point attack that finished the game 8-of-14 (.571) from beyond the arc, including a torrid 7-for-10 from long distance in the opening frame.

Junior Jessica Freeman added nine points and junior Tawanna Lee chipped in eight. Juniors Chelsea McGowen and Karneshia Garrett tallied a team-best six rebounds apiece.

With the score tied at 43-all early in the second half, a three-pointer by Kastanek sparked a 9-2 run to stake NC State to a 52-45 lead with 14:53 remaining.

The two sides would trade baskets over the next six minutes until, with the score 61-57 in favor of the Wolfpack and 8:50 remaining on the clock, a three-point possession on free-throw by Barrett and a put-back by Burke sent NC State on a 22-7 run that would extend to the final buzzer and give the Wolfpack a 19-point victory.

Earlier in the contest, during a back-and-forth first half that featured a total of seven ties and 12 lead changes, UNCW rattled off eight unanswered points to erase a one-point deficit and build a 15-8 advantage.

NCSU countered the Seahawks stretch with a 12-3 run to take a 19-18 lead, only to see an Andrews' three-pointer spark the Seahawks to another 8-0 spurt that would rebuild their seven-point cushion, 26-19.

The Wolfpack responded once again, this time tallying six straight points to start a 13-5 stretch that would once again put them ahead by one, 32-31.

A jumper by Andrews would spell the end of the NC State spurt and give the Seahawks a one-point lead, 33-32.

That advantage would be short-lived, however, as the two sides exchanged points over the remaining four minutes of the first half until a jumper by sophomore Lakessa Daniel sent the game to halftime deadlocked at 39-all.

UNCW opens the home portion of its 2011-12 schedule Sunday as it welcomes long-time rival East Carolina to Trask Coliseum for a 2 p.m. matinee. NC State is on the road Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest at TCU.
