Sophomore Alisha Andrews scored a team-high 16 points to lead UNCW against Washington State Sunday in the consolation game of the Lady Lion Classic

STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania - Washington State used a 20-2 run over a seven-minute span to erase a nine-point deficit and defeat UNCW, 72-60, in the consolation game of the Lady Lion Classic Sunday at Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center.

In the first meeting between the two programs, the Cougars evened their season mark at 1-1 while the Seahawks dropped to 0-2 on the young season. UNCW returns to action Wednesday when it wraps up its season-opening road swing with a 7 p.m. contest against NC State at Reynolds Coliseum.

Junior Carly Noyes scored 12 of team-high 16 points in the second half to power a Cougars comeback that saw WSU connect on 15 of its 32 (.469) of its field goal attempts and convert 13 Seahawk turnovers into 17 points over the final 20 minutes. Senior Rosetta Adzasu joined Noyes in double figures with 11 points while four other Cougar players pitched in seven or more points each.

Sophomore Alisha Andrews scored 16 points and junior Karneshia Garrett added 11 for UNCW, who shot just 35.9 percent from the field and made only six of its 19 three-point tries. Junior Chelsea McGowen added eight points and a game-high eight rebounds as the Seahawks held a 40-37 advantage on the glass.

With the score tied at 22-all with less than six minutes remaining in the first half, a three-pointer from the left side by Andrews sparked UNCW to an 11-2 run and a 33-24 advantage.

Washington State would take control of the contest moments later, however, as junior Katie Grad scored her only points of the game on a driving layup to ignite the game-changing run that lasted to the 14:38 mark of the second half and gave the Cougars a 44-35 advantage.

Back-to-back baskets by Andrews and Garrett ended the WSU surge and pulled UNCW within four, 44-40. The Cougars responded to the UNCW spurt, notching 13 of the next 17 points to take their largest lead of the game, 57-44.

The Seahawks made one last push, rattling off six unanswered points over a 1:40 span to trim WSU's 12-point cushion to six, 64-58, with just 2:38 on the clock.

That would be as close as UNCW would get, however, as sophomore Sage Romberg knocked down four straight free throw attempts to push the WSU cushion back to double digits and lead the Cougars to an 8-2 run to close out the contest.
