WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The UNCW baseball team will play both the USA and Canadian Junior National Teams next month at Brooks Field, marking the first time the Seahawks have faced teams at the international level.
The teams are using the games to prepare for the COPABE Pan American AAA/18U Championships later in the fall in Cartagena, Columbia.
"It's an honor and we're excited to host these two national programs," said Mark Scalf, UNCW's 21-year coach. "I've been fortunate to work with the U.S. National program in the past and am looking forward to not only helping them prepare for the Pan Am Games, but also seeing our program play against some of the best talent in the world at that level."
The Seahawks will battle Team Canada on Friday, Sept. 16, 6 p.m. and Team USA on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 4 p.m.
Scalf has worked closely with Team USA in the past. He served as an assistant coach under Ray Tanner in 2003 and Mike Weathers in 2007.
UNCW athletic trainer Aldo Plata has also been involved with the national program. In the last four years, he has assisted the USA staff with the Tournament of Stars, U18 Trials and Breakthrough Series.
