WILMINGTON, N.C. -
The Seahawks hit the homestretch this week hosting Virginia
Commonwealth for a three-game CAA series beginning on Thursday.
On Monday Thomas Pope added to his accolades when he was
named CAA Player-of-the-Week for a third time this season. Pope hit .617 for
the week, including .667 in conference action at Old Dominion. He scored four
times and drove in six runs. At .422, he's bidding to become the first Seahawk
to lead the CAA in hitting since Tommie Adams did so in 1989 with a .385
average.
UNCW, who is in third place, needs two wins against VCU to
clinch a CAA tournament berth outright. The Seahawks can get in with one
victory, but will need help from either Towson or William & Mary, who face
each other at Towson. Conference-leader Old Dominion and second-place James
Madison have already clinched their spots in the four-team postseason
tournament.
The Seahawks will have their handsfull for sure this weekend
when VCU arrives at Brooks Field. The Rams are the defending CAA Champions
after topping the Seahawks in the championship game last season. VCU stands at
21-29 overall is in ninth in the CAA standings at 11-16.
All games this week will air locally on ESPN Radio AM 630
and will also be shown on HawkVision at UNCWsports.com.
