WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Junior Thomas Pope was named Colonial Athletic Association Player-of-the-Week for the second time this season after hitting .556 (10-for-19) last week and raising his league-leading batting average to .423.
Pope helped the Seahawks to a road series win over the weekend against Hofstra, going 7-for-10 at the plate with seven runs scored and five knocked in. In the opener, Pope connected on his third homer of the season, a grand slam, that gave the Seahawks a lead they would never relinquish. In the doubleheader sweep, he collected three hits in each game and extended his current hitting streak to nine. He fashioned an 11-game streak earlier this season.
He was named CAA Player-of-the-Week on March 14, when he was also named national player-of-the-week by Collegebaseballinsider.com.
This has been a breakout season for Pope, who entered his junior season with just 54 hits and 21 runs batted in in 53 career games. In 2011, Pope enters the week tied for the club-lead with 60 hits, is second on the squad with 36 RBI and has stolen a team-high 13 bases. He also has posted season-highs with 10 doubles and three home runs.
The Seahawks host Coastal Carolina on Tuesday before returning to CAA play this weekend with a three-game series at preseason favorite James Madison. The series begins on Friday with a 6:30 p.m. start at Veterans Memorial Park.
