WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - UNCW and Head Coach Aidan Heaney open their home schedule this
Friday when they host UCF in the Courtyard by Marriott/UNCW Classic at the UNCW
Soccer Stadium.
Joining UCF and UNCW in the classic are Long Island and
Winthrop. Two games are set for Friday and two more on Sunday.
The Seahawks enter the weekend with a record of 1-1 after
splitting a pair of matches to open the season at the WVU Classic in
Morgantown, W. Va., last weekend. UNCW knocked off a solid Binghamton side, 1-0,
before bowing to host West Virginia, 3-2, in double overtime. The loss placed
the Seahawks third in the tournament while seniors Indy Smith and Daniel Roberts were named to the all-tournament team.
In the opener, senior Nassim Berhouni scored the game's lone
goal when he headed home a free kick by junior Shaun Utterson in the 15th
minute. Senior Brock Duckworth would secure his 19th career shutout with a
four-save effort.
In the tournament finale, both sides exchanged leads into
the second half when Roberts drew the Seahawks even with a goal on a free kick
in the 78th minute. WVU, though, would notch the game-winner 1:45 into the
second overtime.
UCF brings a potent offense into Friday's test for the
Seahawks. The Golden Knights have scored nine goals on the season, coming in
white-washings of Jacksonville (5-0) and Florida Atlantic (4-0). Leading the
scoring parade is Nicholas Keown-Robson with eight points on three goals and a
pair of assists. Two of those goals came on penalty kicks.
