WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Coastal Carolina scored unanswered three goals in the final 16:03 of regulation to rally from a two-goal deficit and defeat UNCW, 3-2, in collegiate women's soccer action Friday in Hilton Garden Invitational at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Chanticleers moved to 2-3 on the season with the come-from -behind victory while the Seahawks slipped to 1-3. Elon was victorious in the other day of the day as it posted a double-overtime victory over Gardner-Webb in the tournament opener. All four teams are back in action Sunday with the conclusion of the two-day event. Coastal Carolina and Elon open the day with an 11 a.m. contest while UNCW and Gardner-Webb are slated to follow with a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
Following a scoreless first half, UNCW opened the scoring just 1:48 into the second half as sophomore Stephanie Rose converted a penalty kick opportunity for her first goal of the season.
Sophomore Amanda Holmes doubled the Seahawks advantage in the 60th minute as she sent a low line drive just inside the right post from 22 yards out.
Freshman Hannah Brown started the Coastal comeback at the 73:57 mark as she put a shot from 22 yards out just under the crossbar. Senior Anna Tupy was credited with an assist on the play.
The Chanticleers struck again just 5:20 after the Brown strike as freshman Alyssa Clark knocked home a deflection on a corner kick by Brown to knot the score at 2-all.
Sophomore Morgan Thomas put home the decisive marker at the 88:18 mark as she notched the game-winning goal on a penalty kick.
UNCW held a 17-8 shot advantage in the contest while Coastal posted a 5-3 edge in corner kicks taken. Sophomore keeper Jessica Barton made five saves for Coastal Carolina while junior Chandler Follett recorded three saves for the Seahawks.
