UNCW Drops Home Opener To UCF

WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The UNCW volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-17) loss to UCF Friday in action at the Courtyard by Marriott Tournament at Hanover Hall.

The Golden Knights remained undefeated as they improved to 4-0 on the young season. The Seahawks slipped to 1-3 with the setback. UNC Greensboro won the other contest of the day as it posted a 3-0 (25-15-, 25-16, 25-17) victory over South Carolina State.

All four teams return to action Saturday as the tournament concludes with four matches. Play begins with UNCW and South Carolina State at 10:30 a.m. and continues with the UNCG and UCF at 1 p.m.  The night session features UCF and South Carolina State at 5 p.m. before the tournament concludes with the Seahawks and the Spartans at 7:30 p.m.

Junior outside hitter Kirstin Fisher posted a match-best 17 kills and sophomore opposite side hitter Evija Vilde pitched in 14 kills to pace the UCF attack. Vilde hit .524 for the match as she committed just three errors in 21 total attempts to guide a Golden Knights offense that posted a .187 hitting percentage, highlighted by a .357 attack clip in the decisive game. Junior setter Rachel Vukson handed out a match-high 27 assists while sophomore Libero Meredith Murphy led all players with 11 digs.

Senior outside hitter Kelli Clear led UNCW with nine kills while senior middle blocker Rachel Caricato pitched in five and freshman outside hitter Samantha Seifert added four. Freshman libero Haley Collins paced the Seahawks with 10 digs while setters sophomore Natalie LaHaie and junior Kelsey Bendig dished out 12 and 10 assists, respectively.  Junior middle hitter Kimberly Friedl led the Seahawks with four total blocks while Caricato and junior middle hitter Emily Morhman added three each.
