
WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The UNCW volleyball team begins the home portion of its 2010 schedule this weekend as it hosts the Courtyard by Marriott Tournament at Hanover Hall.
The Seahawks will welcome Central Florida, South Carolina State and UNC Greensboro to the Port City for the two-day event. Live stats are available for all six matches of the tournament while HawkVision will provide live video-streaming of UNCW's matches against South Carolina State and UNC Greensboro. UNCW is off to a 1-2 start after opening the season at the High Point Classic last weekend, opening with losses to the host Panthers and Appalachian State before closing out the appearance with a straight-set victory over North Carolina A&T.
Freshman outside hitter Samantha Seifert got her UNCW career off to a solid start as she garnered all-tournament team honors after averaging 2.80 kills per set and turning in a .208 hitting percentage. Senior Kelli Clear also had a solid opening weekend as she averaged 2.80 kills and 3.60 digs per set while Junior defensive specialist Delanie Dolan stepped into the team's starting libero role and averaged a team-best 5.40 digs per set.
One of two teams that will enter the weekend with a perfect record, UCF is off to a 3-0 start for the second straight season as it opened the 2010 campaign with victories over Houston Baptist, Florida Gulf Coast and Bethune-Cookman last weekend at the FGCU Tournament. Junior Kristin Fisher paces a potent Golden Knights attack she is averaging 5.00 kills per set and a .316 hitting percentage. Sophomore Evija Vilde is second on the team with a 3.67 kills per set while pacing the squad with a.379 attack percentage. Defensively sophomore Meredith Murphy has guided the team's defensive efforts with a 4.56 digs per set average.
South Carolina State is off to a 1-3 start after opening the season at the Tiny Laster Invitational last weekend in Hampton, Va. All-Tournament Team selection senior Jarne Gleaton highlights a balanced Bulldogs attack that features four players averaging two or more kill per set with a team-high 43 kills while junior Bria Brimmer quarterbacks the attack with a 8.88 assists per set average. The duo of sophomore Shabree Robertson and freshman Desiree Waller have given South Carolina State a formidable blocking combination in the early going as they have teamed up to post 31 of the team's 51 total blocks to date.
UNC Greensboro looks to build off its perfect 5-0 beginning to the season as it swept through the field in the Norfolk State Spartan Classic last weekend before posting a road victory at North Carolina Central on Wednesday. The Spartans have benefitted from a powerful attack that has averaged 12.63 kills per set and is hitting .216 for the season while the UNCG defense has combined to post 16.53 digs and 2.53 set set.
UNCW returns to the road next weekend as it travels to the Hoosier State for the Butler Volleyball Invitational. The Seahawks are scheduled to face the host Bulldogs, Army and Xavier in the two-day event.
