WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - Former UNCW standout catcher Chris Hatcher has been promoted to
the Florida Marlins as the club enters the final month of the 2010 season.
Hatcher becomes the second Seahawk this season to reach the major league level.
Hatcher split his fifth season in the organization between
the triple A and double A levels with New Orleans and Jacksonville (Fla.),
respectively. Prior to earning the promotion, he narrowly missed hitting for
the cycle on Tuesday in Jacksonville's 5-0 win over Tennessee. The only hit
missing was a triple.
Hatcher was a fifth-round draft pick of the Marlins
following his junior season with the Seahawks in 2006. That season he hit .348
with 17 stolen bases and 55 runs batted in. Hatcher was named Colonial Athletic
Association tournament most valuable player after collecting three game-winning
hits, including a two-run triple in the bottom of the ninth that sent the
Seahawks to the NCAA tournament. For his career at UNCW, Hatcher hit .324 with
16 home runs and 105 RBI.
Hatcher, who is the seventh Seahawk to reach the major
league level, joins John Raynor as Seahawks in the major leagues this season.
Raynor opened the season with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Marlins play the Washington Nationals on Wednesday in
the final game of a three-game set in Miami.
