WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - The reigning Colonial Athletic Association regular season and
tournament champion Seahawks open the season this weekend with matches against
Binghamton and West Virginia at the Save Face WVU Classic presented by Subway
in Morgantown, W.Va.
The Seahawks welcome back 10 starters from last year's
14-3-5 squad that captured the program's first CAA championship and advanced to
the second round of the NCAA tournament. UNCW returns 32-of-33 goals scored as
well as every player who posted an assist.
In goal the duo of senior Brock Duckworth and junior Brandon
Miller combined to limit opponents to 0.64 goals per game, ranking 10th
nationally. Duckworth was a second-team All-CAA selection and also earned
All-South honors.
Leading that defensive unit is senior All-America Indy
Smith. As a junior he became the first Seahawk to earn NSCAA All-America
honors, being named to the third-team. Smith was named to the Hermann Award
watch list earlier this summer.
UNCW opens the classic on Friday with Binghamton at 5 p.m.
The Bearcats were picked fifth in the America East conference, but reached the
AE championship tilt in six of the last seven seasons.
West Virginia will be Sunday's opponent for the Seahawks.
The first meeting between the two programs was last season at the Courtyard by
Marriott/UNCW Classic and ended in a scoreless draw through two overtimes. The
Mountaineers were picked to finish third in the Blue Division of the Big East.
Live stats will be available for both games through links on
UNCWsports.com. Mountaineer.TV will also broadcast Sunday's game and that link
