WILMINGTON, N.C. - UNCW used three goals in the opening 22:10 minutes of the contest to race past Elon, 3-0, in collegiate women's soccer exhibition action Saturday evening at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
Sophomore Kim Currie opened the scoring at the 9:01 mark as she collected a loose ball at the top of the box and slotted a shot into the lower right-hand corner.
Junior Chandler Follett and sophomore Caitlin Hunter combined for the shutout as the duo was forced to make just one stop in the contest.
UNCW held a 13-8 edge in shots while the Phoenix posted a 6-2 edge in corner kicks taken.
Both teams open the 2010 regular season Aug. 20 with home against Atlantic Coast Conference competition. UNCW hosts No. 10 Wake Forest while Elon entertains Virginia Tech. Both contests are scheduled for 7 p.m. kickoffs.
Sophomore Stephanie Rose doubled the Seahawks advantage in the 19th minute on an individual effort that saw the Jacksonville, N.C., product corral the ball on the left side of the box, maneuver around a Phoenix defender and chip the ball past Elon keeper Kristen Haney into the left side of the net.
Senior Megan Novak closed out the scoring in the 23rd minute as she fired a shot from the top of the box that Haney was able reach up and get her fingertips on, but was unable to keep from crossing the goal line.
