WILMINGTON, N.C. - The success of UNCW's student-athletes in the classroom continues to mirror their accomplishments in the athletic arena, according to the annual Academic Progress Rate (APR) report of the nation's 332 NCAA Division I schools released Wednesday by the NCAA.
All 19 of UNCW's intercollegiate teams remain in full compliance with the governing body's guidelines, and the women's golf team received a Public Recognition Award for being in the top 10 percent nationally for its work in the classroom.
"We're very proud of the academic work by our student-athletes," said Kelly Mehrtens, UNCW's athletic director. "Our student-athletes have done a wonderful job of balancing the rigors of being a Division I student-athlete. They take their academic pursuits seriously, and continue to prepare themselves well for the future."
The APR is a real-time measure of eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team, which has been shown to predict later graduation success. The multi-year report is based on data submitted for the 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08 and 2008-09 academic years by UNCW athletic officials.
