UNCW Falls In Regular Season Finale

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston built an early lead and held off a late charge by UNCW to pick up a 10-8 win in the regular season finale for both clubs on Saturday in college baseball action at Patriots Point

The Seahawks conclude their regular season with a 30-25 with the non-conference setback, while the Cougars close out their own regular season with a 41-15 mark.

The Cougars used a five-run third inning to extend a 2-0 lead to a 7-0 advantage. Greg Blake, who finished with three hits, and Baker Knox keyed the inning with RBI triples as CofC batted around in the outburst.

Matt Leeds knocked in three runs on two hits, including his 20th round tripper of the season for Charleston.

Junior righthanded starter Justin Bradley (3-2) was roughed up for six runs, five earned, on just three hits, but he tied a career-high with seven walks.

Christian Powell (7-3) earned the win for Charleston after allowing three runs, none earned, on five hits in five innings.

UNCW broke through in the fifth against Powell with three runs to narrow its deficit to four at 7-3. Thomas Pope and Cody Stanley chipped in RBI singles.

Pope and Stanley both finished with two hits and drive in two runs for the Seahawks.

Two more runs in the fifth cut the deficit to 7-5 and Robbie Monday launched his 19th homer of the season in the eighth to reduce CofC's lead to 7-6.

CofC plated three runs in the eighth to push its lead to 10-6, but UNCW added a pair of runs in the ninth to close out the scoring.

The Seahawks next return to action on May 27, when they take on regular season champion and top-seeded James Madison in the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
