Rally Falls Short In Loss To URI

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Mike Lebel collected five hits and Rhode Island capitalized on seven errors by UNCW for a 12-11 win at Brooks Field on Friday in college baseball action.

UNCW's six-game winning streak came to a halt with the loss and dropped the Seahawks to 10-8. The Rams, meanwhile, improved to 5-9 with the road win.

Of URI's 12 runs, just two were earned as the Rams were able to take advantage of every Seahawk miscue. Joining LeBel in fueling the URI offense were Kyle Borden and Evan Laude, who both had two hits and drove in three runs apiece.

Gardiner Leaver picked up the save for winning pitcher Dan Rossignol (3-1). Leaver pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth by fanning UNCW senior Grayson Evans. It was his first save of the season.

Freshman Blaze Tart (0-1) was tagged with the loss after the only batter he faced walked and came around to score in a four-run eighth inning that broke an eight-all deadlock and proved to be the difference in the game.

Freshman Hunter Ridge, sophomore Andrew Cain and junior David Shambley each had two hits for UNCW while Robbie Monday knocked in two runs with his fifth homer of the season. His round tripper came in the bottom of the seventh and tied the game at eight-all.

Notes: The last time UNCW committed at least six errors was in 2001 at William & Mary (L 14-8) ... UNCW dropped to 7-7 at Brooks Field ... UNCW stands at 1-5 in one-run games ... The Seahawks used seven relievers for the second time this season ... Evans and Cody Stanley extended their hitting streaks to 11 and nine games, respectively ... The Seahawks entered the game as the Colonial Athletic Association's top fielding team at .970, but dropped to .962 with the seven errors.
