WILMINGTON, N.C. -
After a pair of impressive midweek wins over Elon and NC State earlier this
week, UNCW (10-7) heads into the weekend looking to extend its six-game winning
streak when it hosts Rhode Island (4-9) for a three-game set beginning on
Friday.
The Seahawks belted Elon 14-1 in Elon before scoring early
and often and relying on their bullpen to top visiting NC State, 9-6, on Wednesday
at Brooks Field. Both team entered the games with batting averages of .316 and
.378, respectively, but ran into a hot UNCW pitching staff.
UNCW starters have gone at least seven innings in five of
the last seven games with Daniel Cropper being the most recent after his seven-inning,
eight-strikeout performance against Elon.
UNCW's rotation for the weekend will be Tyler McSwain (2-0,
1.65 ERA) on Friday, Cam Roth (2-1, 3.09) on Saturday and Justin Bradley (0-0,
1.72) on Sunday. The Rams will send Tim Boyce (0-2, 7.58), Brian Bodjiak (0-0,
6.75) and Ken Graveline (0-1, 7.24), in that order, to the mound this weekend.
Rhode Island, meanwhile, topped Brown, 14-5, on Wednesday to
improve to 5-9. The Rams, who fashioned a 37-20 mark in 2009, have dropped
series at Mississippi State and Virginia early this season.
Offensively against NC State, Andrew Cain and Grayson Evans
each collected three hits on the night with Cain belting a homer and finishing
a double shy of hitting for the cycle. UNCW has raised his batting average to
.304 as a team by hitting .352 in its last five games.
All games this weekend will be streamed on HawkVision, which
can be found on UNCWsports.com.
