WILMINGTON, N.C. - Andrew Cain drove in four runs on three hits, including a home run, as UNCW raced out
to an early lead and held off NC State for a 9-6 win on Wednesday in college
baseball action at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks, who have now won five straight at Brooks Field
against NCSU, posted their sixth straight win to improve to 10-7. The Wolfpack
dropped to 12-5.
Cain, who finished a double short of hitting for the cycle,
helped UNCW extend a 4-0 lead in the second inning with a three-run homer to
center off NCSU reliever Nate King. It was his second round tripper of the
season and gave UNCW an 8-0 advantage.
The Seahawks would add a run in the third on a squeeze bunt
by Mike Rooney and another run in the fourth on a RBI single through a drawn in
infield by Robbie Monday.
Senior Bryan Booth (1-1) earned the win after striking out
three in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
Vance Williams dropped to 1-1 in taking the loss for NCSU. Williams was tagged for three runs in the first inning, his only inning of work.
Senior Grayson Evans added three hits and extended his
hitting streak to 10 games, a career high. In his last 10 games, Evans is
hitting .465 (20-43) with 13 runs scored and 14 driven in.
The Wolfpack rallied from an eight-run deficit with single
runs in the fourth and fifth innings before a four-run sixth made it a
three-run game, 9-6. John Gianis belted a three-run homer to right off senior
reliever Seth Frankoff to key the outburst. Dallas Poulk homered later in the
inning for the Wolfpack's final run of the evening.
NCSU threatened in the seventh, loading the bases, but Booth
closed out the frame with a ground out and a strike out to leave the bases
loaded.
Junior Stephen Harrold posted a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his
first save of the season.
UNCW hosts Rhode Island, Mar. 19-21, when it retakes the
field next.
