Seahawks Flex Muscles In 14-1 Win

ELON, N.C. - Daniel Cropper struck out eight batters and UNC Wilmington flexed its muscles with six home runs as the Seahawks rolled past rival Elon, 14-1, on Tuesday in college baseball action at Latham Park.

The Seahawks improved to 9-7 on the season with their fifth straight victory. Elon, meanwhile, dropped to 10-6.

A six-run fourth got the Seahawks out in front and they never looked back. Matt Holt, who finished with three hits and three runs batted in, got the scoring going with a three-run homer to left center off losing pitcher J.D. Reichenbach (0-1).

Cropper earned his first win of the season and evened his record at 1-1 while striking out a season-high eight batters. Cropper went seven strong innings, allowing one run on three hits and a pair of walks.

Leading 10-1 in the top of the ninth, Cody Stanley belted his second homer of the game and fourth in the last two to highlight four more runs for UNCW as it pushed its lead to 14-1.

Adding home runs for UNCW were Grayson Evans, who also tied his career-high with four hits, Robbie Monday and Alex Hill. Eight of nine Seahawk starters had two or more hits and UNCW racked up a season-high 19 on the night.

Elon's Mike Melillo ruined Cropper's shutout bid with a leadoff homer in the seventh inning.

The Seahawks host NC State on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Notes: Hunter Ridge extended his hitting streak to nine games with a single in the fourth ... Monday and Hill hit back-to-back homers in the seventh ... The six homers were the most since UNCW belted seven at Hofstra in 2003 ... Thomas Jones struck out three in 1 1/3 innings of relief ... UNCW also stole two bases ... UNCW starting pitchers have gone at least seven innings in five of the last six games ... UNCW recorded just three assists on the evening.
