Seahawk Netters Win Third Straight

WILMINGTON, N.C. - The UNC Wilmington women's tennis team extended its winning streak to three matches with a 5-2 decision over Atlantic-10 Conference foe George Washington on Sunday at the UNCW courts.

The Seahawks hiked their record to 7-3 by sweeping the doubles point and capturing four of the six singles matches. The Colonials dropped to 6-5 after falling in the first of two matches against North Carolina opponents.

"This was a good win against a very deep George Washington team," said 10th-year UNCW coach Jenny Garrity. "They were so consistent and ran down a ton of balls, which forced us to win the point two or three times. I was very impressed with how our team showed up today, on the last day of spring break, against a tough team like GW."

Sophomore Christina Lee and junior Lindsay Leblang dispatched GW's Jacqueline Corba and Sasha Gluck, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles to set the tone early, and senior Kayla Schwenk and rookie Christina Riley edged GW's Mimi Hamling and Zoe Krohn, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles to clinch the early point.

"If we had started slowly, I'm not sure we would have swept the doubles like we did," Garrity added. "We had an amazing amount of energy and played very smart. We continue to improve and make strides. We'll need to continue that since we have five CAA matches in the next two weeks."

After GW pulled even with a victory at No. 1 singles, the Seahawks reeled off four straight singles victories to claim the match. Sophomore Casey Dashiell trimmed Gluck, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 6 singles to nail down the match for the Seahawks.

The Seahawks, who had their home date against Drake on Monday canceled, next travel to Charleston Southern on Thursday before returning home for a three-match homestand against Georgia State, Miami (Ohio) and UNC Greensboro.

"We look forward to a good week of practice before heading to Charleston and then playing the defending CAA champs, Georgia State, and nationally-ranked Miami of Ohio," Garrity said.
