UNCW Rallies To Beat Gardner-Webb

ROCK HILL, S.C. - UNC Wilmington scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to erase a one-run deficit and defeat Gardner-Webb, 7-6, in first-day action at the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational Friday.

The Seahawks, who improved to 3-15 with the one-run victory, saw their second game of the day against Providence cancelled due to inclement weather. The weather has also forced changes to the tournament schedule as UNCW will now play Longwood (Noon) and host Winthrop (6 p.m.) Saturday and Delaware State (9 a.m.) Sunday.

GWU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a two-run homerun by senior Mandy Ward and added three runs in the third on a two-run homerun from senior Christa Fullwood and a solo long ball by sophomore McKenzie Morenus to build a 5-0 cushion.

UNCW chipped away at the Lady Bulldogs lead with a run-scoring single from sophomore Laura Sykes in the third and a solo homerun by sophomore Stacey Pinno in the fourth to make it a 5-2 before when the Seahawks plated three runs on a RBI single by sophomore Ashley Shingleton and a two-run double by sophomore Kelsey Eddinger to even the score at 5-all.

GWU re-gained its lead in the top of the seventh, scoring on a Seahawks fielding error to gain a 6-5 edge.

Shingleton opened the Seahawks half of the seventh with walk and Eddinger followed with a single to give UNCW runners on 1st and 2nd base with no outs. Sophomore Jennifer Ladd was next to the plate and laid down a sacrifice bunt in an attempt to move both runners into scoring position. The Lady Bulldogs looked to make a play at first base, but the throw ended up in right field, allowing Shingleton to score the game-tying run before the throw from right field struck Ladd and rolled away, giving Eddinger the opportunity to cross the plate and score the decisive run.

Junior Samme Lisowky picked up second victory of the season in the circle as she was charged with one unearned run over the final 4.1 innings after she relieved sophomore starter Amanda Davenport.
