Big Inning Baseball Gives UNCW 14-7 Win

WILMINGTON, N.C. - UNC Wilmington scored seven runs in the fourth inning and cruised behind the pitching of sophomore Tyler McSwain to storm past visiting Duquesne, 14-7, in college baseball action on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks scored a season-high 14 runs in running their record to 6-7. The Dukes, meanwhile, saw their mark slide to 2-10.

McSwain (2-0) picked up his second win of the season by limiting the Dukes to three runs on six hits in a career-best seven innings. McSwain surrendered a run in the first and tossed shutout baseball into the sixth, striking out four along the way.

In the seven-run outburst, the Seahawks used RBI singles off the bats of junior Cody Stanley, senior Grayson Evans and sophomore Cameron Cockman, on a safety squeeze bunt, but it was freshman Hunter Ridge who supplied the big hit with a ringing double to right center to score two runs.

DU starter Paul Bugajski was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs on seven hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings. UNCW drew eight walks off the DU pitchers.

Freshman Michael Bass was joined by Evans and Ridge with two hits apiece for the Seahawks.

The Dukes fired back in the eighth to close to within two, 9-7, with a four-run frame highlighted by two-run homer by junior Andrew Heck, who finished 3-for-5, three runs scored and a pair of stolen bases. Senior Mark Tracy added three hits, a run scored and a run driven in.

UNCW, however, answered that salvo from the Dukes with a five-run stanza of its own to take a 14-7 lead after eight innings. Bass contributed a two-run double in the inning.

The Seahawks and the Dukes will continue their weekend series on Saturday with a 2 p.m. start at Brooks Field. The game was originally slated for 4 p.m., but the area is expecting bad weather in the evening forcing the time to be moved up.

Notes: UNCW stole three bases to raise its total to 22 on the season ... Hunter Ridge and Grayson Evans own six-game hitting streaks ... Evans surpassed the 100-career RBI mark ... The Seahawks played error-less baseball for just the second time this season (at Jacksonville, Feb. 19) ... Tyler McSwain has struck out 13 in his last 13 innings while allowing just two walks ... Cameron Roth (1-1) will get the start on Saturday.
