WILMINGTON, N.C. - Sophomore third baseman Jennifer Ladd went 4-for-4 and made several clutch defensive plays to help UNC Wilmington outlast Coastal Carolina, 9-6, in the nightcap to gain a split of a softball doubleheader with the Chanticleers Wednesday at Boseman Field.
The Seahawks, who dropped the first game by a 4-2 score, now stand 2-15 on the season following the twinbill. Coastal Carolina is 8-10 overall.
Ladd anchored UNCW's season-high 16-hit attack in the second game as the Seahawks rallied to score three times in the fifth and sixth innings and then survived a CCU rally in the top of the seventh to snap a 14-game losing streak.
Sophomore outfielder Ashley Shingleton went 3-for-4 and scored three times and four other players - Morgan Walters, Kelsey Eddinger, Stacey Pinno and Lauryn Buckworth - delivered two hits apiece in the nightcap.
Junior righthander Amanda Aditays picked up her first win of the season by allowed four runs on six hits, walking four and striking out three, in five innings in the circle. Sophomore Amanda Davenport was credited with his first save of the year.
Sophomore first baseman Stacey Snellings went 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI's for Coastal in the second contest.
Coastal tied the score at 6-all with three runs in the top of the fifth, but UNCW answered with three unearned runs in the bottom of the frame for the decisive margin. Buckworth and Ladd started the rally with a pair of singles and the Seahawks capitalized on two errors by the Chanticleers to gain all the separation they needed.
In the opener, it was all Ashley Frederick for the Chanticleers. The senior righty allowed just one earned run on two hits, walking one and fanning four, to even her record at 5-5.
CCU plated three runs in the bottom of the second inning behind an RBI single from Mecaela Ballard, a double steal and a fielder's choice.
Junior pitcher Samme Lisowsky went the distance in the first game for the Seahawks, giving up four runs on nine hits to fall to 1-5 this spring.
The Seahawks return to the diamond this weekend with an appearance in the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. UNCW opens play in the event with a 4 p.m. matchup against Gardner-Webb on Friday at 4 p.m.
