WILMINGTON, N.C. - Robbie Monday connected on a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to put the Seahawk in front, 5-3, as UNC Wilmington slugged its way past Wake Forest, 10-3, in college baseball action on Wednesday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks improved to 5-7 overall while the Demon Deacons dropped to 6-8 with their second straight loss to open a five-game road swing.
In the seventh, WFU reliever Ryan McGrath (0-1) retired the first two hitters of the innings before freshman Hunter Ridge singled up the middle. McGrath then hit sophomore Andrew Cain to put runners at first and second for Monday. WFU countered with Matt Conway, a lefthander, who surrender a three-run homer to Monday, his third of the season, to put UNCW up 5-3.
UNCW tacked on five runs in the eighth to make the final 10-3.
Monday added a RBI double in the eighth to finish 2-for-5 with four RBI. Seniors Mike Rooney and Grayson Evans each added two hits. Junior catcher Cody Stanley keyed the eighth inning outburst with a two-run double to right center.
Senior Seth Frankoff (2-0) picked up his second win in as many outings in relief. Frankoff struck out six in four innings out of the bullpen. Sophomore starter Steven Davis also struck out six in five innings of work.
Trailing 2-1 in the seventh, WFU's Mike Murray pushed the Demon Deacons in front, 3-2, with a two-run homer to center field. Murray finished 2-for-4 with three runs batted in. Ryan Semeniuk finished with three hits to lead the WFU lineup.
The Seahawks open a three-game series with Duquesne on Friday with first pitch slated for 6 p.m.
Notes: UNCW picked up its fourth straight win in the series with the Demon Deacons, but trail the series, 15-13 ... Andrew Cain had his career-long eight game hitting streak halted tonight ... In his last three appearances, all in relief, Seth Frankoff has struck out 10 in 8 2/3 innings, and allowed just two earned runs ... After collecting one extra base hit against Ball State, UNCW totaled five against Wake Forest, including Alex Hill's second round tripper of the season.
