WILMINGTON, N.C. - T.J.
Baumet's double inside the third base bag with a runner at second plated the
winning run for Ball State as the Cardinals topped UNC Wilmington, 7-6, in 11
innings Tuesday at Brooks Field.
The Cardinals (4-8) snapped a brief two-game losing skid
with the win while the Seahawks (4-7) dropped their fourth one-run game of the
season.
In the 11th, Wes Winkle led off with an infield single off
losing pitcher Ryan Walker (0-1) and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice
bunt by Mitch Widau. Junior reliever Stephen Harrold then gave up what would prove
to be the game winning hit to Baumet.
Baumet collected three hits in the leadoff spot for the
Cardinals while Widau added two hits.
Senior Grayson Evans, meanwhile, tied a career-high with
four hits while senior Ben Thielsen and junior Cody Stanley each chipped in two
hits for the Seahawks.
Reliever Seth Hobbs (2-0) picked up the win for BSU despite
allowing the Seahawks to tie the game in the ninth. Hobbs allowed two runs on
four hits in 1 1/3 innings. Reliever Perci Garner struck out six in 4 2/3
innings of relief for BSU.
Aaron Hammons closed out the game for his first save of the
season as UNCW left the bases loaded with two out in the 11th.
Trailing 6-2 in the ninth, UNCW rallied for four runs and
tied the game on Ridge's two-run single off Hobbs. With one out, pinch hitter
Rhett Miller and Thielsen drew consecutive walks and moved up on a ground out.
Evans then would deliver a two-out single to left to make it 6-4. Cody Stanley
followed with a single sending Evans around to third. A stolen base by Stanley
put runners at second and third for Lidge who then line a single in to center
to tie the game up.
The Seahawks host Wake Forest on Wednesday in a 4 p.m. start
at Brooks Field.
