UNCW Wins Battle Of The Seas

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Alex Hill homered and drove in three runs as UNC Wilmington stormed past Stony Brook with a big first inning for an 11-3 win on Sunday in college baseball action at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks halted a four-game losing skid with the win and improved to 4-6 while the Seawolves evened their record at 2-2 with the loss.

Joining Hill with a three-RBI day and two hits was sophomore Andrew Cain, who finished 2-for-4 and scored a run. Also recording multi-hit games for UNCW were freshman Hunter Ridge and senior Robbie Monday. Ridge doubled twice while Monday added a triple and scored twice.

Senior righthander Seth Frankoff (1-0) picked up the win in relief. Frankoff inherited a 7-2 lead and tossed three shutout innings, allowing just two hits, walking one and striking out three.

UNCW bolted out to a 6-1 lead after one inning as the Seahawks sent 10 batters to the plate in the outburst. UNCW strung together three singles, including RBI knocks by Cain, Monday and Hill, and senior Ben Thielsen tripled off the base of the right field wall to cap the scoring with two runs batted in.

SBU starter Jordan Purington (0-1) suffered the loss in his first appearance of the season. Purington allowed six runs on seven hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings.

Leading 7-3 after SBU plated a run in the fourth on a run scoring single by Pat Cantwell (2-for3), UNCW added two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to push its lead to 11-3. Monday plated the first run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly and Hill followed with a home run to right, it was his first homer of the season. In the sixth, Ridge brought in a run on a sacrifice fly and Cain added a RBI single one batter later.

The Seahawks continue their nine-game homestand on March 9, when they host Mid-American Conference favorite Ball State. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
