- UNC Wilmington
won the 4x400 men's relay to close out the meet, but it wasn't enough as host
Coastal Carolina slipped past the Seahawks, 105-103, in the sixth annual Battle of the Beaches
meet on Saturday at the Coastal Carolina Track and Field Facility.
Coastal Carolina clinched the meet when it won the men's
3,000 meters and also claimed second in the event. The meet win tied the series
between the two coastal rivals at three-apiece.
In the season opening meet for both teams, the Seahawks
picked up scored wins over The Citadel (133-58) and Slippery Rock (136-47). In
the women's meet, UNCW defeated The Citadel (123-46) and Slippery Rock
(124-46).
Winning events in the Battle of the Beaches for the men was junior
Justin Prevette, who won the Long Jump (22-4 1/4), 100 meters (10.74 seconds)
and ran a leg of the 4x100 Relay.
UNCW totaled 21 event wins between the men's and women's
meets.
Jessica Glovas picked up a win in throws events for UNCW,
winning the women's Shot Put with a mark of 35-6 1/2.
In the Long Jump, the Seahawks won the top three places in
the women's event with Shanelle Foster winning the jump with a distance of18-2 1/4.
Freshman Jania Bogle (17-8 3/4) and junior Whitney Jordan (17-4) placed second
and third, respectively.
The Seahawks also captured the top two places in the women's
Pole Vault. Senior Jenna Helmink and junior Maggie Jordan both vaulted 10-11 3/4.
The Seahawks return to action on Mar. 12-13, when they host
the UNCW Seahawk Invitational at the Greene Track & Field Complex.
