FAIRFAX, Va. -
UNC Wilmington finished strong on the final day of the Colonial Athletic
Association men's swimming and diving championship to claim its ninth
consecutive title while the women finished second on Saturday at the McKay
Natatorium.
With its ninth consecutive CAA crown, the Seahawks have tied
James Madison for the most championships in the sports history in the CAA. For
the women, it was their second second-place finish since winning their third
title in 2006.
Allen was named 2009-10 CAA Men's Swimming
Coach-of-the-Year. It was his third consecutive award and the seventh overall
on the men's side.
UNCW's only individual championship on the evening came in
the women's 200 Backstroke as sophomore Stephanie Forlenza tied a championship
meet record when she touched the wall in 1:58.80, also a NCAA "B" cut
qualifying time. The Seahawks claimed the top three places in the event with
senior Laura Chinni (2:00.16) and sophomore Hilary Fritz (2:00.46) placing
second and third, respectively.
Senior Rob Anderson and junior Scott Royal posted UNCW's
best finishes on the evening with a pair of third-place showings. Anderson
fashioned a time of 45.26 in the 100 Freestyle while Royal swam 15:48.52 in the
1650 Freestyle.
In diving, senior Matt Arb (301.90) and junior Kobi Salinas finished
fourth and fifth, respectively, in the men's 3-meter board.
The Seahawks closed out the meet in fashion with the women
winning the 400 Freestyle relay with a time of 3:22.32. The men added a
third-place finish in the finale, clocking in at 3:01.98.
