WILMINGTON, N.C. -
UNC Wilmington has always been solid behind the plate and this season is no
different as returning starter and preseason All-CAA honoree Cody Stanley
returns to key the Seahawks lineup for his junior season.
Stanley and junior David Shambley will see a majority of the
time behind the plate for the Seahawks in 2009. Stanley looks to build off a
breakout sophomore campaign while Shambley hopes to recover from offseason
surgery to contribute for UNCW.
"Cody is a dynamic player and lets his athleticism show in
his game," said Head Coach Mark Scalf. "He was a power source for us last
season and he's been able to make adjustments consistently at bat in the fall
and preseason."
Stanley finished his sophomore season with a .332 batting
average and led the lineup with 56 runs batted and 54 runs scored. He was tied
for the lead with 12 homers while also collecting 13 doubles and a team-best
six triples. The talented product from Clinton, N.C., also swiped a team-high
10 bases.
Stanley positioned himself for possible selection in the
Major League Baseball draft in June after an outstanding season in the Cape Cod
League that included being a starting catcher in the league's All-Star game at
Fenway Park. He hit .299 for Cotuit and banged out 11 extra base hits in the
prestigious summer league.
Shambley had shoulder surgery following last season and has
been progressing through his rehabilitation in the fall and winter. Primarily
used in the designated hitter role in 2009, Shambley hit .250, but scored 15
runs and drove in 11 in 68 at bats.
"David has worked hard in his rehabilitation. As he
progresses, he'll be able to make contributions not only behind the plate, but
also at the DH slot."
Adding to the Seahawks' depth will be Robbie Monday, Dakota Piver,
Cameron Cockman and Thomas Pope also worked behind the plate in the fall and
in preseason workouts.
Next up as we wind down the 2010 preview of the Seahawks
will be the bullpen.
