WILMINGTON, N.C. - Senior Caitlin Kirsteier
broke a pool record in the 50 Freestyle and the Seahawks set a season record
for wins as UNC Wilmington swam past Campbell, 114-83, in women's swimming
action on Saturday at the Seahawk Natatorium.
The Seahawks closed out the regular season with an 11-3 with the win over
the Camels, who dipped to 7-13 on the season. The previous record of 10 dual
meet wins was set in 2005-06.
Kirsteier's time of
23.37 broke a venue standard (23.62) that was set during the 1993 Colonial
Athletic Association championships by James Madison's Cindy Walker.
UNCW opened the meet
winning nine of the first 10 events before exhibitioning the final two events.
Junior Michelle Schisa swam on UNCW's winning 400 Medley Relay to open the meet. She added a
win in the 100 Butterfly later in the meet, posting a time of 59.34.
Picking up wins for
UNCW on the afternoon were junior Sabina Sinska (200 Free), freshman Rachel Wilson (200 IM) and sophomores Anna Munger (100 Free), Mattie Riley (100
Backstroke) and Kasey Richardson (500 Free).
While the men didn't
compete in the meet, several Seahawks did race in time trials, including sophomore
Alex Aguilar who set a pool record in the 50 Free with a time of 20.42,
breaking the previous mark of 20.56, set in 2002 by former standout David
Sokolofsky.
The Seahawks will now
begin preparations for the CAA Championships that begin on Feb. 25. The men
look to extend their conference championship winning streak to nine while the
women attempt to win their first title since 2005-06 and fourth overall. The
championships will be held in Fairfax, Va., on the campus of George Mason University.
