WILMINGTON, N.C. - Junior forward Treasure Johnson scored 12 points to lead four Seahawks in double figures as UNC Wilmington defeated William & Mary, 69-59, in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action Sunday at Kaplan Arena.
The Seahawks improved to 7-13 overall and 2-7 in CAA as they snapped a five-game losing skid while the Tribe dropped to 10-10 and 3-6. The win also halted a six-game winless streak for the Seahawks at Kaplan Arena as they picked up a victory in Williamsburg for the first time since the 2002-03 campaign.
Johnson was joined in double figures by junior forwards Brittany Blackwell and Martha White, who chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively, and freshman Mya Levels, who recorded a career-high 10 markers for the Seahawks, who shot 40.7 from the floor and was 20-of-24 from the charity stripe for the contest. Senior guards Whitney Simmons and Candace Walker grabbed seven rebounds apiece to lead UNCW in that category.
Sophomore guard Taysha Pye poured in 17 points, all in the second half, to lead the Tribe, who made just 23-of-62 field goal attempts in the contest, including just 4-of-22 tries from three-point range. Senior Tiffany Benson chipped in 12 points and pulled down a season-high 15 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season while freshman Janine Aldridge added 10 tallies to round out the Tribe's trio of double-figure scorers.
Leading 29-27 at halftime, UNCW opened the second half on an 18-5 run to build a commanding 47-32 advantage. Six different players found the scoresheet for UNCW during the game-changing stretch, led by seven points from Blackwell, who notched all 11 of her points in the final 20 minutes.
W&M responded to the Seahawks run with five straight tallies to pull within 10 before UNCW scored 11 of the next 13 points to take its biggest lead of the game, 58-39.
The Tribe countered Seahawks spurt with a 9-2 run to once again pull within 10, 60-50, with 5:36 left to play.
UNCW pushed its lead back to 14 moments later on a jumper and a pair of free throws from Blackwell before back-to-back layups by Benson and a jumper from Pye pulled the Tribe within eight, 64-56, with exactly 90 seconds remaining.
That would be as closed as W&M would get, as UNCW would use free throws to stretch its cushion back to 13 before an Aldridge three-pointer with 13 seconds remaining determined the final margin.
In the first half, W&M jumped out to an early 9-2 lead before the Seahawks rattled off nine unanswered points to start to a 17-6 run and give UNCW a 19-15 advantage.
The Tribe battled back, using an 8-3 spurt to take a slim 25-24 lead until UNCW scored six of the last eight points of the frame to take a 29-27 advantage into the locker room.
Both teams return to action Thursday with 7 p.m. CAA contests. UNCW hosts Old Dominion while William & Mary is at Delaware.
