Seahawks Tomorrow is a community outreach program designed to give UNCW student-athletes the opportunity to encourage elementary and middle school children to stay in school, achieve academic success and stay physically active.
UNCW student-athletes hope to motivate youth using the life lessons inherent in sports: the value of respect, teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership and positive attitude. Our student-athletes have an opportunity to be positive role models for children and demonstrate how communities working together can make a difference.
Through Seahawks Tomorrow, our UNCW Athletic Department administrators, coaches and student-athletes are committed to strengthening our engagement and outreach activities in the community. In 2007, the UNC General Administration released the findings of its UNC Tomorrow initiative. The findings called for universities within the system to become more engaged in key challenges facing our state. Seahawks Tomorrow supports this initiative.
Seahawks Tomorrow also supports our partnership with the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. CHAMPS, which stands for Challenging Athletic Minds for Personal Success, is designed to ensure personal growth of the student-athlete. The five commitment areas are academic excellence, athletic excellence, personal development, career development and community service.
Seahawks Tomorrow provides our student-athletes with essential programming to address the total needs of their development, while providing a meaningful contribution to the Wilmington community and the greater southeast region of North Carolina. Student-athletes are given the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to achieve success while on campus and, in the future, through the Seahawks Tomorrow program.
The Department of Athletics at UNCW is dedicated to providing quality programs for all student-athletes. Balancing academics and athletics is challenging and requires maximum effort. It is important for student-athletes to remember that the skills that have made them successful as athletes, such as commitment, discipline, determination and hard work will help them achieve academic, personal and professional success as well. This is a message worth sharing!
