Rams Spoil Seahawks Senior Day With 3-0 Victory

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Freshman outside hitter Michala Kvapilova posted a match-high 16 kills and hit .407 to lead Virginia Commonwealth to a 3-0 (25-8, 25-19, 25-14) sweep of UNC Wilmington in Colonial Athletic Association volleyball action Sunday at Hanover Hall.

The Rams improved to 12-2 in CAA action and 24-8 overall as they finished the regular season in a tie for first place in the league standings with Delaware. VCU will be the top seed and host the CAA Volleyball Championship Nov. 23-24 as it holds the edge in the primary tie-breaker with the Blue Hens based on the Rams victory in their lone regular-season meeting on Oct. 30. The Seahawks finished their first season under Head Coach Amy Bambenek with a 13-18 overall record and a 3-11 league ledger.

Kvapilova paced a Rams attack that hit a blistering .303 for the match with 42 kills and just 12 errors in 99 total attempts. She also pitched in eight digs and three total blocks in an all-around effort. Senior middle blocker Ivana Rich chipped in eight kills and junior outside hitter Mariel Frey pitched in six kills.

Junior setter Lenka Melicharkova benefitted from the balanced VCU attack as she dished out a match-best 22 assists.  Melicharkova finished just shy of a double-double as she recorded nine digs.

Junior middle hitter Rachael Caricato recorded a team-high seven kills to lead UNCW while senior outside hitter Lindsey Stucko pitched in six kills as she became just the seventh player in school history to amass 1,000 kills.
