Seahawks Open 2009-10 Season Sunday Against Terriers

WILMINGTON, N.C. - The UNC Wilmington women's basketball team opens the 2009-10 season Sunday as it takes on Southern-Conference member Wofford in a 1 p.m. matinee at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks, who begin their 10th season under the guidance of veteran Head Coach Ann Hancock, return all five starters and 11 letterwinners from their 2008-09 squad that posted a 16-15 overall record and finished in fifth place in the Colonial Athletic Association with a 9-9 league mark. The 16 wins marked the second straight year and the third time in the past four campaigns that the Seahawks recorded 15 or more wins while the fifth-place CAA finish was the highest in five seasons for UNCW.

UNCW knocked off UNC Pembroke in an exhibition contest Tuesday at Trask Coliseum as the Seahawks reeled off 15 unanswered points late in the second half put away a pesky Braves squad. Junior forward, Brittany Blackwell, a preseason All-CAA pick, led all scorers with 18 points and also pulled down 10 boards for a double-double. Newcomer Jessica Freeman chipped in 11 points off the bench in her unofficial UNCW debut and junior center Martha White had 10 points and five caroms.

Wofford brings a 0-1 mark into Sunday's matchup after falling in its season opener at Campbell by a 80-78 margin Friday night. The Terriers return four starters and eight letterwinners from last season's squad that finished with a 5-24 overall mark and a 3-17 record in SoCon play.

Senior guard Natalie Gramblin looks to lead the Wofford attack after averaging a team-high 9.9 points and 2.6 assists per game during her junior season.  Junior forward Mahagony Williams also returns after averaging 9.2 points on a highly-efficient .492 field goal percentage. Williams also led the squad in rebounding as she grabbed 216 caroms last season, highlighted by a team-best 77 offensive boards. Junior guard Maddie Helms is the team's top threat from three-point range as she shot 39.2 from beyond the arc last season as she connected on a team-high 47 three-pointers.

Sunday's contest marks the sixth meeting all-time between UNCW and Wofford. The Seahawks hold a 4-1 edge in the all-time series, including a 83-58 victory in their last meeting on Nov. 22, 2004. The Seahawks are 2-0 at home against the Terriers, winning their only other meeting with Wofford at Trask Coliseum by a slim 72-71 margin on Nov. 22 1997.

UNCW begins a two-game roadtrip Thursday with 7 p.m. contest at longtime rival East Carolina. Wofford is back in action Wednesday with a 6 p.m. contest versus Norfolk State at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
