WILMINGTON, N.C. - UNC Wilmington head
men's soccer coach Aidan Heaney was named 2009 Colonial Athletic Association
Coach-of-the-Year for the second time in as many years, and third time overall,
while five Seahawks earned All-CAA honors.
Earning All-CAA honors were junior Indy Smith (First-team), senior David Acosta (Second-team), Brock Duckworth (Second-team) and junior Daniel Roberts
(Third-team). Freshman Etienne Boulanger was named to the All-Rookie squad.
In addition to Heaney being named Coach-of-the-Year at the league's Awards Banquet on Thursday, William & Mary's Andrew Hoxie was honored as CAA Player-of-the-Year, Hofstra's Richard Marinez was named Defensive Player-of-the-Year and Northeastern's Don Anding was tabbed as the league's Rookie-of-the-Year.
After being picked fourth in the preseason coaches' poll, Heaney and his
Seahawks fashioned an unbeaten season at 8-0-3 and captured their second
straight regular season conference title. UNCW set program records with eight
wins and 27 points overall. The Seahawks also returned to the national scene,
jumping back into the national rankings for the first time since 2005. UNCW is
ranked 22nd in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America,
released on Nov. 10. UNCW is also ranked 22nd in the Collegesoccernew.com poll
and 24th in the Soccer Times poll.
Indy Smith earned his second straight first-team all-conference honor
after leading the top defensive unit in the conference. Joining Smith on the
Seahawks backline is David Acosta, who earned his first collegiate honor. The
Seahawks enter the conference tournament leading the 12-team circuit in fewest
goals allowed (12), goals against average (0.62) and tied for the lead with
nine shutouts. Nationally, UNCW ranks 12th in goals against average and 16th in
shutout percentage (0.50).
Brock Duckworth rode a career season for his all-conference honor.
Duckworth enters the weekend's tournament leading the nation in save percentage
(.885) and is ranked 10th with a 0.62 goals against average. Duckworth has
recorded six shutouts, tying his career-high set last season as a sophomore.
Daniel Roberts was named to the third-team after tying his career-high
with three goals from his central midfield position. Roberts ran the Seahawk
offense from that position and ranked second with four assists.
Rounding out UNCW all-conference honorees was Etienne Boulanger, who tied
for the team lead with five goals. Boulanger notched a pair of game-winning
goals against Alabama A&M and VCU and closed out the regular season with a
two-goal outing against Drexel.
The Seahawks look to extend their season this weekend when hosting the
championship tournament. UNCW, the number one seed, takes on fourth-seed Old
Dominion at 7:30 p.m., on Friday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. Second-seed
William & Mary and third-seed Northeastern will play in the first semifinal
