WILMINGTON, N.C. - UNC Wilmington sophomore midfielder Erin Pardini and freshman keeper Caitlin Hunter have been recognized for their outstanding play in last weekend's Colonial Athletic Association Women's Soccer Championship by being named to national Teams-of-the-Week.
Pardini was tabbed for the CollegeSoccer360 Primetime Performer Team-of-the-Week while Hunter was named to the Soccer America Women's Team-of-the-Week.
"We are excited that both Erin and Caitlin were recognized for their play last weekend in the CAA Women's Soccer Championship," said UNCW Head Coach Paul Cairney. "Both players were key parts of our championship run and are deserving of their respective accolades. As with any individual recognition though, their teammates share in this recognition."
Winners of their last five contests, the Seahawks qualified for their first NCAA Tournament appearance by capturing the 2009 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Soccer Championship Sunday with a 1-0 victory over James Madison. UNCW, which tied a program record for victories in a season with the championship game victory against the Dukes, will take a 13-7-1 overall record into Friday's matchup against Georgia, scheduled for a 7:30 kickoff at Fetzer Field on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill.
Pardini was named Most Outstanding Player of the CAA Championship after scoring both game-winning goals. She lifted UNCW past Hofstra in the tournament semifinals as she scored late in the first overtime session on an amazing shot from the left endline before notching the only goal of the championship game when she converted the first penalty kick attempt of her career in the 80th minute. A native of Smithtown, N.Y., Pardini has scored in each of the Seahawks last three games.
Hunter was named to the All-Tournament Team last weekend after allowing just one goal in 187:21 of action. She opened the tournament by making seven saves in UNCW's overtime victory over the Pride in the semifinals and recorded five stops in the Seahawks 1-0 win against James Madison in the championship contest for her third shutout of the season. Hunter, a product of Ashburn, Va., has allowed just one goal in the last 351:46.
Hunter is the second UNCW player this season to be recognized by Soccer America after junior midfielder Megan Novak was selected for the Team-of-the-Week on Oct. 4. Novak scored back-to-back game-winning goals in road victories over James Madison and VCU.
