HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Nationally-ranked
UNC Wilmington extended its unbeaten streak to 11 on Saturday as the Seahawks
battled host Hofstra to a double overtime scoreless draw at the Hofstra Soccer
Stadium.
With the tie, the Seahawks moved to 12-2-4 overall and went unbeaten in
CAA play at 8-0-3. The Pride, meanwhile, moved to 8-7-2 overall and 6-3-2 in
conference play.
The Seahawks, who claimed their second straight regular season title
earlier in the week, will host Old Dominion, the fourth-seed, in a semifinal game
on Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. In the other semifinal match, second-seeded William
& Mary will face off against third-seed Northeastern at 5 p.m.
Junior goalkeeper Brock Duckworth fashioned his sixth shutout of the
season, making five saves on the evening as Hofstra built a 17-9 advantage in
shots. The clean sheet for Duckworth lowered his season goals against average
to a career-low 0.62.
HU goalie Greg Cumpstone also posted a shutout, needing two saves on the
evening to do so.
The Pride threatened in the ninth minute when Thomas Bekas sent a shot
from 30 yards out that was headed away on the goal by junior defender Indy Smith.
UNCW's Tyler Clare just missed preventing overtime at the 87th minute
mark when his shot was cleared off the goal line Bekas.
With the Pride forced to push forward to get a win to advance to the CAA
tournament, UNCW had a pair of chances to score on an open net from distance,
but was unable to convert.
The tie, coupled with wins by Old Dominion and James Madison, eliminated
Hofstra from the conference tournament.
