Seahawks Qualify For Postseason With 2-0 Victory Over Panthers

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Sophomore midfielders Laura Wilson and Erin Pardini scored in the second half as UNC Wilmington qualified for the 2009 CAA women's soccer championship with a 2-0 victory over Georgia State Friday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Seahawks improved to 11-7-1 overall and 7-3-1 in league play while the Panthers finish the season at 7-6-6 on the season and 1-5-5 in conference action. UNCW will learn both its opponent and the location of the championship, scheduled for Nov. 6 and 8, Saturday as eight of the league's 12 teams are in action on the final day of the regular season.

Following a scoreless first half, Wilson staked UNCW to a 1-0 lead at the 49:24 mark as she headed home a corner kick from senior midfielder Heather Froehlich for her second goal of the season.

Pardini doubled the Seahawks advantage in the 67th minute as she knocked home a loose ball inside the middle of the box for her first goal of the campaign. Junior midfielder Jenna Evans was credited with an assist on the play.

UNCW held a 13-8 advantage in shots in the contest, including three attempts that hit the post, and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.

Freshman Caitlin Hunter and sophomore Chandler Follett combined for the shutout as Hunter made five saves before being replaced by Hunter in the 75th minute. Junior Heidi Blankenship made four saves between the pipes for the Panthers.
