WILMINGTON, N.C. -
UNC Wilmington returns to the pool this weekend when the Seahawks host Emory
and Houston in non-conference action on Saturday at the Seahawk Natatorium.
The Seahawks picked up their first two wins of the season
last weekend with sweeps of Gardner-Webb and Colonial Athletic Association foe
Old Dominion. Both the men's and women's programs are 2-1 with their losses
coming against Duke in their season openers.
Last weekend the Seahawks were impressive, setting three
pool records. The women's 200 Medley and 400 Freestyle relay marks fell and
senior Caitlin Kirsteier broke her own pool mark in the 100 Butterfly with a
time of 55.61. That time ranks 20th nationally entering the weekend.
Joining Kirsteier in the national rankings is a pair of Seahawk
men's relays. The 200 Freestyle Relay is fifth with a time of 1:23.18 while the
200 Medley Relay is just outside the top-20, ranking 21st with a time of
1:43.76.
Kirsteier and sophomore Gavin Spake were named CAA
Swimmers-of-the-Week for the efforts against GWU and ODU. Spake helped the
Seahawks to a win over the Monarchs by winning the men's 500 and 1000
Freestyles. It was the second consecutive weekend that Kirsteier earned the
award on the women's side.
Houston, who is making a swing through the Old North State
this weekend, visits Wilmington for the first time. The Cougars, who have
women's swimming only, will open their trip on Oct. 30 at Duke with a tri-meet
that also includes Georgia Tech. UH opened its season with wins over Rice and
Florida International on Oct. 9-10. A pair of Cougars qualified for the NCAA
Zone Diving Meet already this season. Anastasia Pozdniakova and Jessalyn Almond
finished first and second, respectively, in both the 1- and 3-meter dives in
the season opener.
Emory is a NCAA Division III power that swims primarily
against Division I opponents. The Eagles opened their season with a pair of
wins over Davidson on Oct. 24. EU features distance swimmer Liz Horvat, the
Division III swimmer-of-the-year.
UNCW returns to conference action on Nov.6-7,
when they visit Newark, Del., for a quad-meet with Towson, Delaware and George
Mason.
