WILMINGTON, N.C. - UNC Wilmington led
from the opening event in the men's meet and rallied late in the women's, as
the Seahawks swept a swimming dual meet from visiting Gardner-Webb on Friday at
the Seahawk Natatorium.
UNCW posted a 154-107 win in the men's meet and completed the sweep with
a 140-122 win in the women's. With the wins, both Seahawk teams even their
season records at 1-1. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, saw their records fall to 2-2
on both sides.
With their team trailing 105-102 entering the 100 Butterfly, senior
Caitlin Kirsteier won the event (55.85) and sophomore Anna Munger and junior
Sabina Sinska finished third and fourth, respectively, to give UNCW a 116-110
lead it wouldn't surrender.
Kirsteier also added wins in the 50 Freestyle (52.32) and swam the anchor
leg of the 400 Freestyle Relay which set a Natatorium record with a time of
3:31.27.
Freshman Rachel Wilson gave the Lady Seahawks a pair of first-place
finishes in the 500 (5:08.01) and 1,000 Freestyles (10:23.97).
Junior Bobby Guntoro paced the Seahawks on the men's side with a pair of
event wins and swimming on the winning 200 Medley Relay (1:35.36). Guntoro won
the 50 Freestyle (21.91) and the 200 IM (1:58.85).
The Seahawk men won nine events to power them to a home win. Adding wins
were sophomore Mike Smiechowski (1,000 Free), senior Pete Humphries (52.69),
freshman Ray McGorry (100 Breast), sophomore Gavin Spake (200 Fly) and junior
Scott Royal (200 Back). UNCW capped its meet winning the 400 Freestyle Relay (3:14.63).
The Seahawks open Colonial Athletic Association action on Oct. 24, when
they host rival Old Dominion at 1 p.m.
