WILMINGTON, N.C. - Junior forward Salma Tarik and sophomore forward Laura Greene scored twice within a 64-second span in the second half as Hofstra edged past UNC Wilmington, 2-1, in Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer action Friday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Pride remained in first-place with the victory and improved to 9-4-1 overall and 6-1 in the league. The Seahawks, meanwhile, dipped to 8-6-1 and 4-2-1, but held on to second-place and leads third-place William & Mary by a point.
Trailing 1-0, Tarik drew HU even in the 66th minute when she finished off a goalmouth scramble that started on a served ball from the right side
Just 64 seconds later, Greene headed home her own rebound off the cross bar to lift the Pride to a 2-1 lead.
Freshman forward Stephanie Rose struck for her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the ninth minute to give UNCW the early lead. Sophomore midfielder Erin Pardini sent a through ball from midfield into the penalty area where Rose beat her defender and HU junior keeper Krysten Farriella to the ball and tucked her shot into an empty net at the 8:44 mark.
The Seahawks had opportunities to draw even, but HU was able to escape with a win.
UNCW pressure in the 79th minute on a shot from close range from Rose that was blocked and a header by senior forward Ashley Myers was knocked out of bounds for a corner kick, the first of three in a two minute span.
Freshman keeper Caitlin Hunter made seven saves for the Seahawks, who were narrowly outshot, 17-14.
Farriella made four saves before leaving the game in the 86th minute with a leg injury.
The Seahawks conclude their four-game home stretch on Oct. 18 with a 1 p.m. kickoff against Northeastern.
