WILMINGTON, N.C. -
The Seahawks close out their fall schedule this weekend with an appearance at
the prestigious Bank of Tennessee at the Ridges in Jonesboro, Tenn.
UNC Wilmington has strung together three consecutive top-two
finishes entering the tournament that features 13 teams ranked in the top 60
nationally, including 10th-ranked NC State and 13th-ranked Oregon State.
The Seahawks are ranked 53rd after finishing second behind
South Carolina at the Rees Jones Invitational earlier this month. UNCW rallied
from a ninth-place standing after one round to climb past several
nationally-ranked opponents to take second.
Senior Derek Wallace keyed that drive and recorded his
fourth top-10 finish of the fall. Wallace fought through a rain-soaked opening
round of 78 to record an even-par 72 in the second round and capped the
tournament with a third round 75 to climb back into the top 10.
Joining Wallace in the top 20 were junior Ryan Sullivan and
sophomore Taylor Zimmerman. Sullivan posted his best finish of the fall with a
tie for 14th while Zimmerman finished in a deadlock for 17th. Sullivan carded a
four-under 68 in the second round as he flirted with a top-10 finish.
While ranked 53rd in Golfstat.com's head-to-head rankings,
the Seahawks broke into the Golf Digest/Nike national poll by receiving votes.
Golfweek has the Seahawks ranked 62nd in its power poll with Wallace ranked
140th individually.
With this being the final event of the fall, the Seahawks
will open the spring season on Mar. 1-2, with the Seahawk Invitational, being
held at the Country Club at Landfall.
