WILMINGTON, N.C. - The UNC Wilmington women's soccer team stretched its unbeaten streak to five games Sunday as it played George Mason to a 1-1 draw in Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer action at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks moved to 4-1-1 in league play and 8-5-1 on the season with the tie while the Patriots see their record shift to 1-3-2 in conference action and 9-4-2 overall as they played to a draw for the second straight outing.
Both goals in the contest came less than 30 seconds apart from each other as George Mason junior midfielder Omolyn Davis opened the scoring at the 35:46 mark when she stole the ball from a UNCW defender just inside the box and fired a shot into the upper right-hand corner of the net for her seventh goal of the season.
The Seahawks leveled the score at 1-all just 25 seconds later as freshman midfielder Amanda Holmes knocked home a loose ball for her second goal of the campaign. Sophomore midfielder Kelly Dodd was credited with an assist on the play.
UNCW had a chance to score the go-ahead goal in the final minutes of regulation as a close-range shot by junior midfielder Jenna Evans in the 89th minute set off a goalmouth scramble that saw the Patriots defense clear the ball off the goal line twice to preserve the tie.
In overtime, a shot in the 95th minute by George Mason senior forward Kelly Keelan found the crossbar before being cleared out of the box by the Seahawks defense.
UNCW held a 21-17 advantage in shots taken in the contest while George Mason was awarded six of the 10 corner kicks taken on the afternoon. Seahawks freshman keeper Caitlin Hunter was credited with eight saves while Patriots freshman keeper Katie Frey recorded nine stops.
Both teams return to action Friday at 7 p.m. with CAA contests. UNCW hosts league-leading Hofstra while George Mason entertains Drexel.
