Novak Notches Overtime Winner As Seahawks Stun Dukes, 1-0

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Junior midfielder Megan Novak scored midway through the first overtime session to lead UNC Wilmington to a 1-0 victory over James Madison in Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer action Friday at the JMU Soccer Complex.

The Seahawks pick up their first win in nine visits to Harrisonburg as they improve to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in league play. The Dukes, who were ranked 25th in the Soccer America pre-season poll and were picked in the league's annual coaches poll to win the CAA regular season title, dropped to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in CAA action as they suffered their first conference loss of the campaign.

"It was a complete team effort for us tonight against James Madison," said UNCW head coach Paul Cairney. "JMU is a tough team to play at home and I very proud of our girls for being able to handle the pressure of the Dukes attack. A lot of credit goes to our backline, who played extremely well tonight and were able to keep a potent JMU attack off the scoreboard."

Following a scoreless regulation, Novak notched the game-winning goal at the 95:34 mark when freshman forward Stephanie Rose played a cross through traffic that Novak was able to knock home for her first goal of the season. Junior midfielder Chelsea Godbout was also credited with an assist on the play.

Earlier in the contest, the Dukes almost took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute as a shot by junior midfielder Teresa Rynier 20 yards out hit the post.

JMU held a 19-10 advantage in shots in the contest, but were unable to solve Seahawks freshman keeper Caitlin Hunter, who made a season-high 10 saves for her first career shutout.  Junior Diane Wszalek made four stops between the pipes for the Dukes.

Both teams return to CAA action Sunday with 1 p.m. kickoffs. UNCW is at Virginia Commonwealth while JMU hosts Georgia State.
