WILMINGTON, N.C. - Freshman midfielder Cortlyn Bristol recorded her first collegiate tally in the 54th minute to lift William & Mary to a 1-0 victory over UNC Wilmington in Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer action Thursday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Tribe improved to 7-2 on the season and 1-0 in league play as it extended its winning streak to four games. The Seahawks dipped to 4-5 on the season as it got off to a 0-1 start in conference action.
Bristol notched the game-winning goal at the 53:46 mark as she collected a loose ball just outside the box on the left side and beat a UNCW defender before firing a shot past UNCW sophomore keeper Chandler Follett into the upper right-hand corner of the net.
UNCW's best chance to level the score came in the 72nd minute as a freshman forward Stephanie Rose found sophomore midfielder Erin Pardini open inside the box. Pardini quickly put Rose's feed on frame, but Tribe junior keeper Grace Barnard was in position to make the point-blank save and preserve the shutout.
William & Mary held an 11-9 advantage in shots in the contest while both teams were awarded two corner kicks apiece during the match. Barnard made five saves to record her fourth shutout of the season and third straight as she stretched her active shutout streak to 384:19. Follett was credited with one save.
Both teams return to league action Sunday with 2 p.m. matinees. UNCW is at Old Dominion while W&M hosts Georgia State.
