WILMINGTON, N.C. - Etienne Boulanger
and Shawn Guderian notched goals and Brandon Miller fashioned his first shutout
of the season as UNC Wilmington claimed the UNCW/Courtyard by Marriot Classic
with a 2-0 win over Alabama A&M on Sunday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks, who won the tournament for the third time in five attempts,
improved to 3-1-1 with the win. The Bulldogs, though, remained winless on the
season and dropped to 0-4.
Boulanger, a freshman, opened the scoring in the 10th minute of the game
to give UNCW the early lead. Freshman Thomas Driver slipped a through ball into
the penalty area and to a wide open Boulanger, who tucked his shot into an open
net at the 9:22 mark.
Guderian, a sophomore, collected his team-leading and career-high fourth
goal of the season giving the Seahawks a 2-0 lead 58:18 into the contest.
Junior Tyler Wheaton started the play on the right flank and slid a pass to
Guderian just inside the penalty area. Guderian took a touch and then beat AAMU
goalkeeper Paul Musoke inside the near post.
Both teams played evenly in the first half with the Seahawks holding a
slim 8-6 advantage in shots. But in the second half, UNCW outshot the Bulldogs,
13-3, to finish with a 21-9 edge.
Miller needed to make just three saves in recording the shutout. It was
UNCW's second shutout of the tournament after junior Brock Duckworth
stonewalled West Virginia in double overtime on Friday.
Musoke finished with six saves; many coming on close range shots.
UNCW claimed the tournament crown with a 1-0-1 record and a plus-2 goal
differential. Appalachian State (1-0-1, +1) finished second and was followed by
West Virginia (0-0-2) in third and Alabama A&M in fourth at 0-2.
Reigning Colonial Athletic Association Defender-of-the-Year Indy Smith
was named Defensive Most Valuable Player while Appalachian State's Arie Muniz
was honored as the Offensive MVP.
The Seahawks return to the field on Sept. 19, when they host rival UNC
Greensboro at 7 p.m. at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
