Midfield Combo Lead Seahawks Past Gardner-Webb, 2-0

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. ?  Senior Kelly Renkin and freshman Erin Pardini each had a goal and an assist to lead UNC Wilmington past Gardner-Webb, 2-0, in collegiate women's soccer action Friday evening at Greene-Harbinson Field.

The Seahawks evened their season mark a 1-1-1 while the Bulldogs fell to 1-2-0 on the young season.

“It was great to score early,” UNCW head coach Paul Cairney said. “Gardner-Webb responded well to that goal and brought the game to us. We were fortunate to get the second goal of the game at a critical juncture and provide ourselves some breathing room in the second half.”

Renkin staked UNCW to a 1-0 lead in the first minute, beating Bulldogs keeper Jessica Tuggle with a shot to the lower left-hand corner on a fast break opportunity.  Freshman Erin Pardini was credited with an assist on the play.

Pardini increased the Seahawks cushion to 2-0 at the 37:22 mark after Renkin was able to head the ball to Pardini on a restart, allowing her to beat a charging Tuggle with a chip shot from 15 yards out.

Senior keeper Emily Pratt kept the Bulldogs from cutting into the lead, making three saves for her second shutout of the season.

Renkin's tally moved the Midlothian, Va., product into a three-way tie for first-place on the school's career game-winning goal chart with 12. Pratt also made a move in the program's record books as the shutout gives the Bolton, Ontario, native seven career clean sheets to place her in a tie for third.

UNCW returns to action Sunday as it concludes a three-game road swing with a 1 p.m. contest at No. 16 Wake Forest. Gardner-Webb is back on the pitch Sept. 6 when it welcomes Florida Gulf Coast to Boiling Springs for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
