HARRISONBURG, Va. - No. 7 seed UNC Wilmington set a tournament-record for fewest points allowed as it cruised to a 50-30 victory over No. 10 seed Towson in the first round of the 2010 Virginia 529 College Savings Plan CAA Women's Basketball Championship Thursday at the JMU Convocation Center.
The Seahawks, who shattered the previous mark for points allowed of 35, set by Old Dominion against William & Mary during the 1997 championship, improved to 12-18 overall as they advanced to the quarterfinals for the fourth straight season, where they will face host and No. 2 seed James Madison Friday at 5 p.m. The Tigers finish their season with a 15-15 record.
Junior forward Brittany Blackwell scored a game-high 13 points to guide a Seahawks attack that made 18-of-49 attempts from the floor for the game. She was the only UNCW player to score in double figures as sophomore forward Kristen Hanzer added nine points and junior forward Treasure Johnson chipped in eight. Blackwell also added a team-best 10 rebounds to record her ninth double-double of the season and the 25th of her career.
Senior guard Shanae Baker-Brice was limited to just 11 points in her collegiate finale as the Tigers made just 12-of-56 field goal attempts to shoot 21.4 percent for the game. Baker-Brice was also charged with seven turnovers as Towson combined to commit 25 miscues, including 14 turnovers in the first half. Senior Katrina Wheeler pulled down a game-best 11 caroms while Baker-Brice and senior Kandace Davs added six rebounds apiece as the Tigers held a 43-29 advantage on the boards.
Baker-Brice gave Towson to an early 3-0 lead with a basket and a free throw in the opening 65 seconds of the game before the Seahawks used six straight points by Blackwell to spark a 12-0 run that lasted over nine minutes and gave UNCW a 12-3 lead with 10:32 remaining in the opening frame.
Back-to-back jumpers by Baker-Brice snapped the Seahawks run and pulled the Tigers within four, 11-7. That would be as close as Towson would get, as a driving layup by Johnson in the final seconds of the first half gave UNCW a 20-13 halftime lead and ignite an 18-4 spurt that gave the Seahawks a 35-18 advantage with 12:48 left on the clock.
UNCW maintained a double-figure advantage throughout the remainder of the contest, taking its biggest lead 48-25, with 2:34 on the clock. Towson scored five of the last seven points of the game to determine the final margin.
